Activities of the DataCite Global Access Program (GAP) team during Open Access Week 2023
The Open Access Week 2023 advocates for the theme “Community over Commercialization,” emphasizing the significance of fostering a collaborative and inclusive research environment. This theme highlights the important role of prioritizing communal benefits and knowledge dissemination over profit. By promoting open access to scholarship, this initiative aims to amplify the value of shared information, collaborative endeavors, and the democratization of knowledge. Raising awareness among the research community about the value of prioritizing the common good over commercial interests can foster a culture of open, equitable access, and collective progress. It encourages the research community to actively engage in the dissemination of their work, fostering a vibrant and interconnected research ecosystem that thrives on inclusivity and shared expertise.
As a non-profit organization, DataCite promotes openness, equitable access, and collaboration across the research ecosystem. As a global community, we share a common interest: to ensure that all research outputs and resources are openly available and connected so that their reuse can advance knowledge across and between disciplines, now and in the future. In 2023, we launched the Global Access Program (GAP) and a Global Access Fund (GAF) to improve access and enable communities in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America to further benefit from our open infrastructure services. Engaging with these communities (in different languages!) is an important pillar of the GAP. Below is a summary of DataCite’s activities during the 2023 Open Access Week:
