DataCite Annual Member Survey 2023

https://doi.org/10.5438/9vnh-3v05

Mid-October to early December 2023 saw us once again survey you, the DataCite community, about whether we service your needs in terms of the products we offer, support we provide to you, and events we organize. As a community, we are guided by the current and future priorities of our Members to ensure that we remain valuable and relevant to you.

General

Around 17% of DataCite Members took part in the 2023 survey. Respondents represented:

  • All regions, with over half from Europe
  • Widely varying membership durations
  • All Member types, with 40.5% being Direct Members

Our Members’ likelihood of recommending DataCite to other organizations increased again this year, including more than 50% of respondents giving us a full 10-out-of-10 rating (corresponding to ‘extremely likely’). This means that the average overall rating has now risen for four consecutive years in a row.

The main areas that Members felt DataCite is doing well are:

  • DOI Services and Infrastructure
  • Technical Expertise and Support
  • Community Involvement and Engagement, Communication, and Standardization and Documentation

Specific answers to this question indicate that the community-driven development of DOI registration services (Fabrica and API) is valued by DataCite Members. Furthermore, a frequent mention of “fast and excellent support” is reflected by our internal tracking of support tickets, showing that 80% of responses were within a 24-hour timeframe.

Looking at what we can improve on, the three areas mentioned are:

  • Documentation
  • Platform Features and Functionality
  • Community Involvement and Engagement

It should be noted here that a response to this question was required in the survey, and more than 20% of respondents did so by saying that there is “nothing to improve”. Within our Annual Vision for 2024, we will be reviewing all of our documentation in line with an overarching content strategy. In accordance with our Member needs, continuous enhancement of DataCite services remains at the heart of our product development.

Product Development

This year, we updated the product development section to ask how satisfied Members are with our services and which of them we should focus our development efforts in 2024. Interestingly, the top three services that DataCite Members are most satisfied with, and the top three that you want us to prioritize are the same: DataCite Fabrica coming first in both cases, and DataCite Commons and the Rest API appearing in second and third place.

As in the 2022 survey, Members had the opportunity to share challenges currently faced that DataCite services may help to resolve, and aligned with this, what areas of product development we should concentrate on in 2024. The top three challenges are:

  • Citation metrics
  • Metadata quality
  • DOI registration

While the top three suggested focus areas for 2024 are:

  • Accelerating discoverability of resources with DOI metadata
  • Develop user interfaces and services to support members’ metadata analysis
  • Accelerating metadata completeness

There are clear parallels between the challenges faced and the suggested areas of focus for 2024. The largest challenge of data citation faced by our Members remains unchanged from the 2022 survey. It is being addressed by DataCite through the Make Data Count project, which has just announced the first release of the Data Citation Corpus, a trusted central aggregate of all data citations that increases understanding of data usage and the advancement of meaningful data metrics.

Support & Events

Following the same trend as the general recommendation above, Members’ experiences of the DataCite Helpdesk and Support pages have improved every year since 2021, with average ratings now standing at 8.8 and 8.1, respectively. Around three-quarters of Members have used our Helpdesk and Support pages. In over 91% of cases, DataCite Members were able to find relevant information on our Support pages and, as already stated, additional documentation is deemed of great importance to Members, with 44.3% reporting this will be the best way for them to achieve their goals when using DataCite services.

In a newly added questions about events, Members were asked about preferences when it comes to types of events and their frequency, as well as the best way to notify them that these events are taking place. The top three DataCite events valued by Members are:

  • Webinars
  • Training Sessions
  • Annual Community Meeting

Finally, the top three communication channels preferred by Members to learn about our events are:

  • Email campaigns
  • Newsletters
  • Monthly digests

As always, we express our gratitude to everyone who responded to the survey. Your views matter, they guide the vision and direction of DataCite as we continue on our journey as a global community that ensures research outputs and resources are openly available and connected.
