IGSN ID Registration: Moving from Interest to Implementation

The International Generic Sample Number (IGSN ID) is a globally unique and persistent identifier that can be assigned to any material sample resulting from research in any domain. Through a partnership between DataCite and the IGSN Organization (e.V.), DataCite DOI services for registering IGSN IDs are available to all DataCite Members and Consortium Organizations. On top of the descriptive metadata, the connection metadata PIDs host can provide rich insights into complex concepts and processes, such as the productivity and achievement of a researcher, the entire lifecycle of a research project, even the progress and impact of a research domain. Creating complete and high-quality connection metadata both relies on and benefits each stakeholder group in the research ecosystem.
